Destiny 2 Winter Event: The Dawning 2017 - MMO Anthropology
Yesterday, Destiny 2 released the first winter event in this Bungee published game. So I had to go join in and see what the festivities were all about.
The event presents all the normal hallmarks of a winter event: snow, snowballs, the presence of lights (in the form of lanterns) and a general expression of hope and connectedness. Much of the atmospheric foundation is provided via the warlock vanguard, Ikroa Rey, an NPC in the game voiced by Gina Torres.
Although the game has introduced this idea of grinding up tokens of affection, gifts, for various other NPCs. I am left to wonder if there was room to provide some sort of between-PC gifting that could have been included.
The game already has a "gift" mechanic that allows players to purchase a consumable, that when used in the PvP or PvE instances delivers extra rewards to the entire fireteam. However, this pre-dates the winter event and its gifting concepts and it's a very passive gift system.
I suspect that Destiny 2 did not implement a more active, directed gifting system for the same reason that the players are largely mute in the tower. (In fact, there is no voice or text chat in the social areas.) To create a system where players would directly gift each other would erode the separation that Bungie has built into the game.
For better or worse, here's The Dawning, a festival about the end of a year and new beginnings.
