We've all done that thing that makes us look like the goat, and not in the good sense. Such is sim racing, such is life. With that said, I believe that incident takes the cake for most "what.... the.... heck?" wreck.
You can even see exactly what I saw - I was looking right in that direction (purely by luck!), but his car was hidden by my mirror anyways. I literally never saw it coming. FoV was irrelevant, single screen / triple screen / rift was irrelevant, driving skill or reaction was irrelevant. That was basically a perfect storm freak occurrence. Any other part of the track I see him and avoid him, from right there... not a chance.
As for the strategy - I don't think it would have scored me a win looking at the lap charts post race and doing some figuring. I think my pace and the winner's pace would have been pretty equal, coupled with the track position disparity not a chance. However, bar the occurrence, I feel safe in saying I'd gained more positions than staying out. I'd do it again.
And again, another reminder : the pit entry and exit are race track. I don't know if it's because green flag stops are infrequent in this series so people don't feel safe with it or what, but you can't afford to lose 5 seconds so easily in an oval race. Push it!
