Is anyone still playing ( The Last of US Online in 2019)!
Called "Factions," The Last of Us online multiplayer mode aligns you with one of two factions: Hunters or Fireflies (their roles are explained in the single player campaign).
This initial selection is permanent, and cannot be changed until either completing the "story" that frames the entire multiplayer experience, or having your clan wiped out.
Modes
There are three different modes: Supply Raid, Survivors, and Interrogation. In Supply Raid, it's normally 4 vs. 4, and your only objective is to kill the opposing teammates until they are all gone. Survivors is the same concept, except the match is divided into rounds in which all 4 players must be killed, and no one respawns until the next round. Survivors offers a better chance to change the tide of the battle and any team can win regardless of how bad they're losing. Interrogation is completely different from both - it's still 4 on 4, but instead of just killing, you have to interrogate the opponents (done the same as a Special Execution) to find info that reveals their lockbox. You then have to open the lockbox. This mode requires a lot of strategy to win, but can be good for beginners who desire to improve their skills.
As noted in previous previews of the single-player campaign, approaching The Last of Us like an Uncharted game will result in utter failure. Multiplayer makes that even more clear. While TLOU has all the dressings of a standard third-person cover shooter, the limited ammo and lack of regenerative health forces players to approach combat quite differently. Running and gunning almost certainly results in quick death.
Multiplayer encourages the same kind of methodical play that the single-player does, but increases the difficulty by pitting you against actual people instead of AI. Many of the systems are carried over into Multiplayer, including crafting. The items in multiplayer can really turn the tides in the match, and you'll find yourself looking for drop points searching for the materials necessary to craft these valuable items. These drop points can be collected by each player separately; so it can be a good idea to create a spike bomb and leave it at the drop point to stave away enemies from its contents.
Shivs will let you instantly and silently kill opponents you sneak behind, while bombs can be strategically placed on the map to kill unsuspecting foes.
You'll want to crouch often and make your way through the environment slowly, as the radar highlights any sound that's made. And obviously, weapons are a giveaway of your position. Like in single-player, you'll be able to "listen" to your environment using R2, which lets you see an moving player in your immediate vicinity. It's important to note that Hearing mode (R2) only lasts a couple of seconds before a long cooldown is started. You should use it sparingly. Because every player is keenly aware of sound and motion, it behooves you to be very aware of your own surroundings.
The metagame does add an interesting wrinkle to every multiplayer match, because there are always additional considerations to make in every battle. Often there will be specific objectives you'll need to accomplish, like getting a certain number of kills by a certain deadline. In addition there is a crafting mechanic as well as a shop. You can gain an edge in battle through crafting weapons (akin to the campaign) using supplies you have found. However, you also gain currency (dubbed "parts") throughout the match.
