Should you buy a cheap mechanical keyboard? Do they work? Are they any good? Are they worth it?

Yes. I chose one with a few key features to give the greatest flexibility: hotswappable keyswitches, simple LEDs, no software. With this keyboard I can replace the switches, change the keycaps and add a detachable cable socket. It's not the greatest keyboard in the world, but I can upgrade it gradually and make it quite comfortable to use. Best of all, none of the parts are wasted and I can carry over any upgrades to a new keyboard later on.
