In hisWednesday Vlog Lawnboyspost1975 talked about whether or not the gaming and retro gaming community are too crowded for new channels to make it. And this video is my response to that video. You can check out Dave's original video here:

Don't think so. It all depends on what you do YouTube for. Back in the day there were less channels but it was all about the interaction with your friends on not necessarily about making it big. Nobody was big and back then having 2000 subs was huge! Of course over time some channels really blew up and others stayed small and that certainly has changed how YouTube works.

Starting out and becoming big takes time, it did so in the past. Quite a few of the huge channels have been at it for 10 years! 10 years! There's many people starting out on YouTube with way too high expectations. They expect instant fame and instant recognition. I think it's either about being incredibly talented, being genuine and true to yourself, about personality.

I am on a second channel myself, the first still has 1700 subs and my current channel is about 2400. I like this number and wouldn't necessarily want to be a bigger channel at all. For me it's about the interaction. When I am seen by my peers and get responses from them then I am happy.

I don't intend to be a commercial professional channel with high production values. For me high production value doesn't necessarily put more fun into the videos. Views on my videos range from a 20 to a lot more but it's all over the place. If I were to invest in a much higher production value, analyze all the views and tailor the videos that I put out so that they are geared towards getting the most views, I doubt my channel would be growing more rapidly. It'll be less fun for me actually and probably would be less fun to watch because of that.

There's no instant fame, only in some cases. Do it for you and your friends. Start out small and be content with being small. All sorts of strangers commenting - also being a**holes about things is what happens more and more when you get bigger. You need to have a bit of an elephant's skin for that too.

There is a degree of saturation when it comes to big / commercial channels, there can only be so many big tech channels, big gaming channels, big retro channels all doing the same thing. Then it still boils down to the person, personality...

Oh and a tip, if you want your videos to show up in all sorts of lists, use the right keywords when uploading the video and put relative information in the description of the video. That sure helps getting the videos noticed.
