It's Time to Replace Commander’s Power 10 Scale With This Instead!
This week Nathan talks about a better alternative to the Commander power 10 scale that solves the problems inherent to a power 10 scale as the introduction for a deck in the rule zero conversation. Nathan's proposal solves the problems of the power 10 scale by collapsing the lower end of the scale, eliminating the unnecessary values within the casual range of power, and centering the scale around the average power level that players tend to play at in a game of Commander within Magic the Gathering.

The Power 10 scale is a popular method used by Magic: The Gathering players to grade the overall strength and competitiveness of Commander decks. Originating from the need to quantify and communicate the power level of a deck in a casual multiplayer format, the scale provides a common language for players to set expectations and ensure balanced gameplay.
The scale ranges from 1 to 10, with 1 representing an unoptimized, janky deck that may include fun or experimental cards with little synergy. These decks are often built for pure enjoyment or thematic flavor. On the other end, a 10 represents a highly tuned, competitive deck, often known as a cEDH (Competitive EDH) deck, designed to win as quickly and efficiently as possible. These decks include powerful combos, optimized mana curves, and minimal reliance on chance.
The Power 10 scale is subjective, with variations depending on local playgroups. However, it serves as a vital tool for players to discuss deck strength, ensuring that games are enjoyable for all participants by aligning expectations. Whether aiming for casual fun or serious competition, the Power 10 scale helps players tailor their decks and gameplay experiences within the vast possibilities that Commander offers.
Magic: The Gathering (MTG) is a popular collectible card game created by Richard Garfield and first released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. It combines strategy, fantasy, and storytelling in a richly immersive game where players assume the roles of powerful spellcasters known as Planeswalkers. Each player builds a deck of cards representing magical spells, creatures, and artifacts, using them to battle opponents in a competition to reduce their life total to zero. The game is played using a variety of card types including lands which provide mana to cast spells, creatures that are used to attack and defend, and instants and sorceries which produce powerful one-time effects.
Magic features a complex ruleset and deep strategic elements, with gameplay that often involves constructing decks tailored to specific strategies, known as archetypes. With various formats like Standard, Modern, and Commander, MTG offers diverse gameplay experiences. Its expansive lore, numerous expansions, and continuous updates keep the game fresh and engaging. Players enjoy the dynamic nature of deck-building, strategic planning, and the thrill of both competitive and casual play. The game's rich universe and complex mechanics contribute to its enduring popularity and global community.
