How to Quickly Cut Cards from Your Commander Deck #commander #mtgcommander #edh #magicthegathering
Follow this flawless step-by-step process to quickly make cuts to your Commander deck. This is an absolutely foolproof method to get to 100 Magic the Gathering cards so that you can stop bashing your head against your computer and go jam more games with your friends.
What the heck do I know though, here's what my digital friend, Charles Penrose the Third, thinks:
When trimming your Commander deck down to exactly 100 cards, it can feel overwhelming, especially if you're aiming for optimal synergy. Here’s a quick, effective approach:
1. Start with Core Essentials:
Commander: You've already got your commander locked in (1 card).
Lands: Typically, you want 35-38 lands. Start by selecting around 36 lands, adjusting based on your deck’s mana curve.
2. Remove Redundancies:
Look for cards that perform similar functions, like multiple mana ramp spells or creature removal. Choose the best ones and cut duplicates that don't add unique value.
3. Focus on Synergies:
Prioritize cards that directly support your deck's theme or your commander’s abilities. For example, if you’re building a landfall deck, prioritize landfall triggers and land recursion spells over generic strong cards that don’t fit your theme as well.
4. Refine Your Mana Curve:
Aim for a smooth curve, with a focus on spells costing between 1 to 4 mana. If you have too many cards at 5 mana or higher, cut some of those high-cost cards unless they are game-ending bombs.
5. Balance Removal, Card Draw, and Utility:
Ensure you have enough removal (creature, enchantment, artifact) and card draw or card advantage. A solid deck typically has about 9-10 pieces of removal and 10-12 card draw spells. If you're over this, cut the less efficient ones.
6. Mana Fixing and Ramp:
Try to have around 8-10 ramp spells, such as mana rocks or spells that help you get extra lands. If you’re too high in these categories, trim down accordingly.
7. Trim High-Cost, Situational Cards:
While big, splashy cards are fun, if they’re too situational or expensive to cast, they might be worth cutting unless they synergize perfectly with your strategy.
8. Test and Adjust:
Once you’ve made your initial cuts, playtest the deck. Simulate some draws or games to see what’s clunky or underperforming, and then refine further by cutting non-performers.
These steps should help you get closer to a streamlined, efficient 100-card Commander deck.

Magic: The Gathering (MTG) is a popular collectible card game created by Richard Garfield and first released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. It combines strategy, fantasy, and storytelling in a richly immersive game where players assume the roles of powerful spellcasters known as Planeswalkers. Each player builds a deck of cards representing magical spells, creatures, and artifacts, using them to battle opponents in a competition to reduce their life total to zero. The game is played using a variety of card types including lands which provide mana to cast spells, creatures that are used to attack and defend, and instants and sorceries which produce powerful one-time effects.
Magic features a complex ruleset and deep strategic elements, with gameplay that often involves constructing decks tailored to specific strategies, known as archetypes. With various formats like Standard, Modern, and Commander, MTG offers diverse gameplay experiences. Its expansive lore, numerous expansions, and continuous updates keep the game fresh and engaging. Players enjoy the dynamic nature of deck-building, strategic planning, and the thrill of both competitive and casual play. The game's rich universe and complex mechanics contribute to its enduring popularity and global community.
