While introducing One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest at the American Film Institute in 2007, Jack Nicholson took a moment to reflect on one of the film’s funniest behind-the-scenes memories—thanks to his longtime friend and co-star, Danny DeVito.

Nicholson praised DeVito’s sharp improvisational instincts, recalling a specific moment during the filming of a basketball scene. As Nicholson passed him the ball, DeVito—playing the unpredictable character Martini—immediately turned and hurled it straight into the fence where the camera was set up.

“I laughed so hard,” Nicholson said, “I thought, what an impulse… fantastic.”

The moment wasn’t just hilarious—it perfectly captured the chaotic energy of the characters and made it into the final cut of the film. Nicholson reenacted part of the scene during the AFI event, mimicking the confusion and shouting that followed DeVito’s unexpected move.

It’s a reminder that sometimes the most memorable moments in film aren’t planned—they’re the product of genius instincts and fearless creativity.

If Cuckoo’s Nest is one of your favorites, Nicholson suggests you leave a 🏀 in the comments.
