Exactly 20 years ago today, on June 15th, 2005, Christian Bale redefined the Caped Crusader with the release of Batman Begins. His gritty, grounded take on Bruce Wayne launched Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed trilogy and cemented Bale as one of the most iconic Batmen of all time.
But rewind five years to the day—June 15th, 2000—and you’ll find Bale in a very different role: The Dark Aight. That’s the internet’s nickname for his performance in Shaft, where he played the racist, privileged son of a wealthy businessman. In one particularly infamous scene, Bale's character repeatedly utters the word “aight” in an awkward attempt to mimic Black vernacular—turning the moment into something unintentionally hilarious and cringe-worthy.
It’s wild to think that the same actor who once shouted “aight” with villainous glee would go on to growl, “I’m Batman,” just five years later. Talk about range.
Happy 20th to Batman Begins—and a reluctant nod to The Dark Aight.
