Every PC strategy enthusiast knows it well: the Jagged Alliance series should not have been forgotten over time. Unfortunately, the mediocrity of its recent chapters has undoubtedly contributed to this fate, and thinking about the quality of the early episodes, those rigorous and engaging ones, undoubtedly brings a tear to our eyes.
But now, finally, there seems to be hope: Jagged Alliance 3, developed by Haemimont Games and available since July 14, 2023, attempts to bring the saga back to its former glory. Has it succeeded in its intent? Follow me to find out!
Haemimont Games is a studio that has certainly come a long way since its beginnings, and in Jagged Alliance 3, there is a certain confidence in handling strategy in all its aspects. The team has presented the series with a new look, while still retaining its core elements, drawing inspiration from both the saga's past and the strategic tactics of Firaxis Games, such as XCOM 2.
The story focuses on the State of Grand Chien, devastated by internal conflicts due to factions vying for the territory's natural resources. The player takes on the role of a group of mercenaries, selected from a large database of professionals, hired to find the missing elected president and put an end to the oppression of the brutal paramilitary force known as "The Legion."
The player's objective is to find the head of state, funded by their family, and slow down the Legion's advance by training locals to fight and capturing territories to obtain extra resources and grow the group of mercenaries.
The game starts with the hiring of mercenaries, where the player must manage the available budget. Of course, choosing experienced members and extended contracts increases costs and affects finances, leading to the risk of failure.
There is a tutorial, but don't expect to receive all the necessary instructions to master the game. This represents one of the main issues with the game, making the entry rather difficult, not so much regarding the field operations but rather the overall management of financial aspects, which are crucial for success.
Once the dynamics of the game are learned, the satellite map becomes clearer and more readable, allowing the player to make more thoughtful choices. The map is divided into tiles, each of which allows basic actions such as sending someone on reconnaissance, resting, repairing equipment, healing the wounded, or training mercenaries.
Combat, a fundamental part of the experience, is similar to XCOM, with turns where each character has a certain number of action points to make their moves. The available weapons are varied, ranging from knives to rocket launchers, providing a wide range of tactical options.
Furthermore, the game offers a series of well-designed mechanics that cover many possible scenarios, such as friendly fire and panic attacks in case of losing a comrade on the battlefield.
From a technical point of view, Jagged Alliance 3 is effectively made, convincingly representing the various locations where operations take place, from jungle villages to semi-desert areas and destroyed cities. The user interface is functional, but some menus and buttons may be unclear initially.
In summary, Jagged Alliance 3 is an engaging and satisfying game, with a long campaign that offers many rewards. Although it has some flaws, such as initial difficulties and some absurdities on the battlefield, it is still a high-quality title and better than the more recent chapters of the series.
