A while back, I talked about how DL Site, a prominent distributor of Japanese media, suspended payments of Visa, MasterCard, and American Express while leaving more Japanese-centric payments like JCB intact. I'm not sure if they actually work for the international crowds, but it is definitely going to be more difficult for the global market to purchase their stuff.

Turns out they're not the only ones that suspend Visa and MasterCard in favor of other payment methods. Fantia did it. Melonbooks did it. Skeb did it. NicoNico did it. A manga archive website named Manga Library Z has to shut down because the payment processors don't work on them anymore.

The crackdown is due to regulations about sexual content featuring minors. Clearly, Visa and MasterCard can't tell between fiction and reality. It's so bad that Yoko Taro, the director of NieR Automata and Replicant, spoke out against it, saying that it's an attack on democracy and free expression.

I've seen people talk about how payment processors have control over Japanese media and that they are censoring people. This is not just typical censorship. This is worse. This is straight up banning your products to be sold because the payment processors didn't like the content. Forget censorship. You can't even buy the products unless you use Japanese centric methods.

This is where decentralized currencies like crypto coins would've reigned supreme. If only they weren't used to scam people left and right. Hopefully, the alternative payment method works okay for international buyers. Failing that, sail the seas I guess.
