Jazz Jackrabbit 2 The Secret Files full game playthrough on Steam Deck OLED Nostalgia trip
Ok, here is a game that truly takes me back... all the way to the primary school. I remember seeing Jazz Jackrabbit 2 for the first time at my friend's house. It was the shareware version of the game and the music from the lab level stuck in my head for good. Back in the day, when I was at primary school, PCs were very expensive and I had maybe 4 or 5 friends who had one, let alone one that was good enough for gaming. Some time later, I learned that another friend of mine had the full version of the game and we played the crap out of it every time we gathered at his house (we played it alternately with FIFA).
Years have passed and here I am, playing this old gem on a handheld device more powerful than any of us could imagine back then. For us at that time, stuff like Jack Jazzrabbit 2 was peak gaming experience. Time were superficially simpler, so were our hobbies. Nowadays, it is sometimes awesome experience to forget about the FPS, graphics, min-maxing, online guides. It's good just to sit back and enjoy a simple and fun game. Because this is what we lack in the 21st century - fun simplicity.
NOTE: I played the GoG version of the game. You can install GoG, Epic and Amazon games with a program called Hero Launcher. I really recommend using it on your Steam Deck because it expands the capabilities of your SD even more, adding your other libraries to the already expansive choice of games.
NOTE: I got stuck in walls several times. If this glitch happens, the best solution for this is to hold SHIFT (i.e. any button you set for SHIFT, in my case it was the right trigger) and press J J K (I assigned J and K to L4 and R4).
NOTE 2: You may notice that I was pretty thorough with picking up ammo and trying to reach all the hidden spots and goodies. I treated this playthrough as a score attack, that is why you'll see me waste ammo just to be able to pick up the rest of it.
NOTE 3: I played the game in docked mode, with the Steam Deck connected to a TV and the output resolution forced to FHD (because Steam Deck will in default scale everything to the resolution of your monitor/TV, which in case of a 4K TV would result in a huge performance hiccup). I used the "pixel" scaling option just to create a sharp retro look to the game.
