Jet Island (Spiderman VR) - VR Gameplay HTC Vive
What happens when you mix Spiderman, Iron Man and Silver Surfer with a dash of sci-fi? Jet Island.
Initially the games concept reminded me of another game Trance VR that I was rather unkind to in my review (https://youtu.be/zcA_2gKESJM) Admittedly, because of this, I went in with lowered expectations and was pleasantly surprised.
Jet Island plays like a sci-fi Spiderman game swinging around giant bosses from web-slinger like hooks. You also have wrist jets, a hoverboard and pretty powerful plasma pistol to assist you.
Trying to figure out the controls for all those toys is a bit cumbersome at first but after you make your way through the tutorial and give it a few minutes you get the hang of it. It takes some time to get comfortable but once you get there the controls feel natural and more and more you feel like spouting witty one-liners.
While I thought the mechanics felt great, this game isn't going to be for everyone. This game is definitely for the senior VR crowd who have their VR legs under them. Even I almost lost my balance a few times while playing. Not so much due to vertigo but contorting my body while swinging around. Throw even the slightest bit of vertigo into that and it will be a recipe for disaster. Bear that in mind when purchasing.
While I loved the mechanics, the graphics are fairly subpar. We're not winning any awards for pretty here. It was tolerable in headset. When you're in headset the most important thing is consistency. Jet Island is at least consistent.
I'm a bit concerned about content with only 4 bosses, some outposts and exploration you might run out of things to do before you've had your fill swinging around town. I was able to clear the tutorial and the first boss in under an hour. Now that I'm used to the controls and know what to do I don't expect the remaining bosses to take as much time.
If you're the type to climb Mt Everest just because it's there though... It looked like there are quite a few heights (and lows) you'll be able to explore just for the hell of it. Achievements based on reaching some of these locations would go quite a ways to extending the life of the game in my opinion. Even hiding some collectables around the world might be a good idea.
The world is actually much larger than I was expecting. It's even much larger than it looks when you're up high and looking out at the horizon. Unfortunately it's hard to really appreciate just how large the map is at a glance. I wish the sense of scale and speed were better conveyed as going 50 MPH in Sprint Vector feels faster than going 215 MPH in Jet Island.
One other minor gripe while I'm grumbling... The enemies didn't seem to have any collision with the objects in the world. I'd like to see this addressed. It's not a major issue but a level of polish that's lacking.
On the flip side, I really liked the keyboard. The visual, audio and tactile feedback from pressing a key was extremely satisfying. I think it's likely the best VR keyboard i've used. Truthfully I really liked all of the character creation. More customizations and other unlocks would also be very welcome.
Overall I had fun with the game and will be recommending it with the caveat that those who get motion sick at all should probably stay away.
