Lems - VR Gameplay HTC Vive
Cute, cuddly critters repeatedly falling to their deaths as I fail to protect them...
Lems is an enjoyable reverse platformer that places more emphasis on your dexterity than your puzzle solving skills. I was expecting more of a puzzle game but I'm not disappointed. I think this style of gameplay would make for a great VR party game. Especially after a drink or three...
All of the maps feel fair and balanced. When one of your little guys dies, you know it's because you messed up. This tickles that 'one more, just one more' urge which keeps you from wanting to exit the game. I personally love games that invoke this feeling.
Speaking of our cute little guys... I'm not sure everyone will go for the cutsie/cartoony graphic style but I think it works well with the attitude of the game. It looks good in headset.
The audio on the other hand... I didn't have any complaints on what was playing, it was lively and whimsical. Fitting for the game. The volume of the music and effects seemed to vary form level to level increasing in volume from the main menu. I'd like to see these leveled out.
As for other things that could be better...
The UI was a bit chaotic in the lobby area. It wasn't initially clear what was UI and what was fluff. It also was entirely clear what clicking on some items did. A bit more clarity here would be nice. It's not an earth shattering issue but it would improve the overall experience.
A much larger UI issue is the lack of a replay option at the end of a successful level. It makes replaying the same level if you miss the coin much more tedious having to quit out and restart a specific level over and over again unless you intentionally kill your Lems.
On the topic of resetting. This is another game that needs an easily visible main menu option to reset your view/orientation. I realize most people will likely start the game with the headset on but it's possible to start with the HMD on the floor. Thus it should be considered and a solution should be present. Restart from within the headset is not an acceptable solution in my opinion.
The last thing I'm not thrilled about is the claim that there are 3 game modes. This seems deceptive to me. Playing the same puzzles with the same goal but a smaller platform doesn't count as a different mode to me.
Overall I did have fun with the game. It could use some polish but that's what EA is supposed to be fore. Polishing up a game.
$18 might be a bit steep but with the inclusion of a free demo of the game to try before you buy, I can't really not recommend the game. At the very least, go check out the demo.
