Jim Carrey's Agonizing Experience Playing the Grinch
Jim Carrey has described his experience playing the Grinch in How the Grinch Stole Christmas as absolutely agonizing. The transformation process required two and a half hours each day for the application of makeup and prosthetics. On top of that, the spandex suit was not only extremely itchy but also made him feel claustrophobic, as though he were "buried alive." Adding to the discomfort, the special contact lenses Carrey had to wear felt like "knives in his eyes," making the role physically and mentally taxing.
Carrey typically spent about 12 hours on set in full costume, leading to grueling 15 to 16-hour workdays when factoring in preparation and removal time. The challenging conditions sometimes triggered panic attacks, forcing Carrey to breathe into a paper bag between shots to regain composure. Director Ron Howard empathized with Carrey's struggles, even donning the uncomfortable Grinch suit himself on multiple occasions to show solidarity and share in the discomfort.
Despite the difficulties, Carrey has recently expressed an openness to reprising the role, citing advances in modern technology. He believes CGI could now replace the need for the spandex suit and laborious makeup process, making the experience far more manageable.
