John Carter, a Confederate soldier, is actually Cain, and gets shot in the back of the head by a cannonball which causes amnesia, John Carter his alias, becomes his identity as he can’t remember who he is. Carter finds that he has great strength and superhuman agility. And starts searching for gold trying to strike it rich, he is sieving for gold in a river gold panning, when a Goblin Martian approaches him from behind being sent to investigate the rumors that Cain has lost his memory, he ask Carter what he’s doing, and Carter replies “What does it look like I’m doing? I’m looking for gold.” The Goblin says “If you want gold we can just give you gold.” “And why would you do that?” Carter says gasping as he turns around to see he’s talking to a goblin. The Goblin explains that his people knew him before he lost his memory and invites him back to the underground goblin city Barsoom in Pellucidar where the goblins tell him that he was engaged to their princess Rosemary, taking advantage of the fact that he has amnesia. Carter marries the goblin princess becoming king of the Martians that live underground, though they call themselves Vril. Rosemary eventually dies from old age her last words to Carter her husband that she was just glad for the time that they had together. During this time more Goblins ventured out onto the surface with their new king, like the goblin painter Basil.
