A rock/metal cover of "Karmotrine Dream" from the video game Va11-Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action.
While technically this isn't a thematic winter/snow level cover people would expect for this time of year, the song itself gives me wintery vibes, and the game does actually take place over Christmas and New Year's Eve!
I played Va11-Hall-A for the first time a couple of years ago and very quickly fell in love with the game! The atmosphere of the game, the aesthetic, the story, and of course the music, all blended together to make a very charming game, and it's a shame that I don't personally know many people who have played this game. The music in this game is absolutely phenomenal then I knew I wanted to get around covering it some day, since it really invokes a certain mood, I thought it would be a fun challenge to make it metal!
The original is one of my favourite songs in the game, and while the song structure is fairly simple and repetitive, it uses some very interesting chords which completely makes this track so memorable! It was a super interesting challenge to work out how to play these chords on guitar and most of them were quite tricky, so I actually had the bass play the root and guitar playing the rest of the chord as opposed to the guitar playing the full chord which is more standard in rock music. Writing a guitar solo over these chords was also pretty tricky since there are more notes in the chord to clash with, I had to think more carefully and treat each chord as if it were an entire key change when writing it. Lastly, when I record my keyboard parts, I usually record one hand at a time since I'm a pretty poor keyboardist, but I wanted to use both hands in the video, and learning to play with both just for that was so much harder than I was expecting it to be!
I then came up with a riff for the heavier sections that outline the chords so that the feeling of the chords isn't lost, which came out a lot 'djentier' than intended, but I wanted to use the 8 string for this one since standard tuning didn't hit quite as hard as I wanted it to. And finally it wouldn't be a cover from me without some time signature changes or some polyrhythms, so I included both in the section after the solo!
I had a lot of fun with this one so I hope you enjoyed it too, because I definitely want to do more covers from this game in the future!
