Kerbal Space Program 1.0 Career 28
I'm back with another Kerbal Space Program video, this time completing my mission to Minmus.
However, before we return to Kerbin, we decide to try to hit one more biome before we return, as we have a bit of additional fuel left. Se we attempt to go further up the hill we are as as we ended up is a strange biome last time when we attempted to land in the 'poles' biome.
So we do a small hop, and after landing we find we are still in the poles biome. We then plan another small hop to another hill, and find that we are *still* in the poles biome.
At the point, we are beginning to run low on fuel, and decide to just return to Kerbin. So we lift off, and get into orbit. Once in orbit we begin to plan burns to return, but our initial attempt had us coming out infront of Minmus, so out attempt to then slow down to return to Kerbin would have us reenter Minmus's sphere of influence, and so not return to Kerbin. So we had to delay our burn to break orbit so that we would be heading away from Kerbin, but slightly backwards from Minmus, so that as we slowed to return to Kerbin, Minmus would get further from us instead of closer to us.
With that planned, we execute it and we slow enough so that will will fall back into Kerbin's atmosphere to about 37 km. We then have to wait the 9 days it takes to fall back to Kerbin.
Once nearly in Kerbin's atmosphere, we detach the engine stage and use RCS to move a bit below it so it can pass us without hitting us. We reenter the atmosphere and begin slowing down as the reentry produces flames around our craft. We reach a periapsis of about 36.5 km, but have only lost about 150 m/s from our top speed, leaving us well above enough speed to go back into orbit.
If fact, we return to orbit, make a second pass, and return to orbit again! However, our third entry into the atmosphere, about 2 hours after we first entered the atmosphere proves to finally be enough to reduce our speed to sub-orbital levels.
As we are slowing down, we rearrange our staging so that the drogue chutes that we have can be activated before our main parachutes, as we have a contract to test that at a height and speed that will probably be dangerous for our main parachutes. We activate the drogue chutes at about 9 km while traveling at about 350 m/s although we could have triggered them as fast as 475 m/s and still have been safe. We then activate the main parachutes at 4.5 km while going about 175 m/s. We splash down safely in the water just south of the desert that is on the continent west of KSC.
Having recovered the vessel, we gathered 2192.5 science for a total of 2260. The parts recovered were worth about 5,200 funds, bring our total to about 3.06 million. Finally, Bill, Bob and Jeb all earned enough experience to reach level 2.
With all these funds and science, we will have a lot of decisions to make at the beginning of the next episode about what to do and where to go next.
