Kerbal Space Program First Contract 3
Continuing my Kerbal Space Program: First Contract game.
This episode we attempt to complete the three contracts that we couldn't complete lats time. We are able to complete the Solid Fuel Booster contract first, and we pick up some extra science at the same time. Then we go for the LV-909 test at high altitude. On our first attempt, we are going too fast for the test and before I realize it, we are above the test altitude. We then attempt to get the test run on the way down, but we're not able to slow down enough again, and miss the test altitude again because we traveled too fast through it.
On the way down, Jeb attempts to get some use from this mission by attempting the get an EVA report while 'flying' under the parachutes over the grasslands. Unfortunately, Jebediah lost his grip, and forgot to hook his safety harness, and wasn't able to use his jet-pack to slow his fall. He will be missed, but his contributions to science will not be forgotten.
The ship for this mission was redesigned to be a bit smaller and less costly as we had more then enough to get to the test altitude, and Bill volunteered to pilot it for the test. This time the test was performed successfully, and we managed to land in the highlands and get some science form there, but no attempt was made to gather more flying EDA reports. A flag was left at the landing site in Jeb honor.
With the science that was gathered, we were able to unlock a probe core and some fins that we will need to build a small but fast craft to test the radial parachutes under 3300 meters but faster than 400m/s. We build a minimalist craft using only 12 parts, but with two LV-T30 engines, and fins for stabilization. We launch, and it is close, but with about 300 meters before we get too high for the test, we reach the minimum speed for the test, and activate the parachutes!
