Killzone 2 (2009) (PS3) (Guerrilla Games)
I've owned a Playstation 3 since 2009 (a year after my YouTube channel was launched), but never made any videos dedicated to this by now decidedly retro console. Recording gameplay from the PS3 through consumer-level devices such as an Elgato is frustratingly difficult due to the console's HDCP nonsense, which prevents straight HDMI solutions. I know that it is possible to use an HDMI splitter to scramble the signal (in a good way) and get past the video protection that way. The trouble is, finding out which splitters are actually capable of performing this legally dodgy task is a challenge in its own right, since the specific brands recommended on US-centric gaming forums are usually not available in my country (and the ones that do have not been reviewed in this respect). Thus, by far the least complicated method is to simple bypass HDMI altogether and use component output instead. I was a little skeptical about this option, but after finally having purchased a cheap PS2/P3 component cable I'm actually surprised by the decent video quality.
As for the game featured in this video, Killzone 2 was a shooter I played through quickly when it was released in 2009 and never thought about again. Just about the only things I remember from that playthrough are the sluggish controls and depressingly grim visual design. In hindsight (and with a little help from Digital Foundry's retro videos), though, it's clear that Guerrilla Games pulled off something quite remarkable in terms of the technology and graphics with this game - even if some of the pre-release marketing was infamously misleading in terms of what the finished product would actually look like. More importantly, the admittedly less visually ambitious sequel, Killzone 3, is probably one of my favorite console-exclusive shooters of all time.
