Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix (PS4) - Zexion (LV1 Critical) *No Damage*
First and foremost, no, Zexion is 100% unable to damage you outside of the book world. His retaliation kick and his book trap may cause Sora's face in the corner to react but you will never take damage until after your in the book world.
First optional boss of the game and this is currently the earliest I've managed to beat him. I usually wait until after Agrabah and Halloween Town so I have more attacks but I wanted to try it after Timeless River so I at least had Quick Run.
Zexion moves a lot in the real world so it's sometimes really hard to hit him, but when you do, you can get at least 3 combos off. Note that he will always prioritize sealing your partners before you so you want to break your partners out. At this point in the game, you simply won't have enough attack for 2 full air combos to break the books so you need to hit it once outside of the combos unless your partner attacks. Speaking of partners, you want to set them to either Technic or Relentless Attack. When you do, they will spam their special attacks as much as possible and will be unable to be sucked into the book world. This is especially noticeable with Goofy who is completely untouchable during Tornado.
It's fairly easy to keep him looped so you never encounter the first phase of the book world but once he is down to 2 and 1/2 bars, its much harder. In this case, he will forcefully suck all 3 characters in with in 2 or 3 attempts. However Fire has a nice little property where it can keep enemies looped forever without triggering their revenge so you can actually skip the entire second phase.
Now to kind of explain the book world. When you enter the book world, he will usually do 1 of 3 things depending the on the phase. In the first phase, he will do a paper tornado that changes your commands to different words. Using the reaction command changes the words and each highlighted word does something different. What each thing does is generally based on what it says so something life or health related will give you HP orbs. Likewise, anything that refers to "leaving" or "removing" will remove the lock. This is a mechanic most people don't understand.
In the second phase he will use X-shaped explosions. This is telegraphed by sparkles surrounding Sora. In the third phase, he will create 3 spotlights, 2 red and 1 blue. The blue spotlight will quickly change exactly 13 times and on the 13th one it will stop for a second before forming a barrier to protect from his unavoidable meteors. Instead of guessing, you can stand in the center and quick run the instant it stops which is much easier when you know its exactly 13.
Actually getting out the book world is not that hard, you simply have to figure out which one Zexion is in, deplete his health and hit him with a finisher. Instead of attack all books, just look around the find the one book that occasionally glow pink. The only thing I haven't really figured out is "when" you can attack him. In the book world he usually telegraphs his attacks by glowing pink and floating up and down but he will often spam to no end when you get near and very often you will get hit by a random untelegraphed book in the background. The only thing I've figured out is that you can block a frontal attacking book and potentially hit Zexion with a counter attack due to it's deceptively large hitbox and ability to stun enemies with super armor.
