King's Quest (Xbox Series X) (Xclusive Indie Playthrough - Part 7) The Daring Rescue
Check out part 7 of my Indie playthrough featuring the game King's Quest! This game released on the Xbox One and Xbox Series family of consoles on July 28th, 2015. It was developed by The Odd Gentlemen and published by Sierra.
In this video, Graham heads to the abandoned well in search of Achaka & aid him in his escape.
King's Quest is an episodic adventure video game where players control a young Graham who goes on many adventures in his quest to become a knight and eventually a king. An aging King Graham regales his granddaughter Gwendolyn with some of his early adventures when he was just a young lad who wished nothing more than to be a knight and had the highest dream of even becoming the king of Daventry. The game is split into 5 different chapters (plus a bonus epilogue chapter) and each chapter focuses on a different tale being told by King Graham. Chapter 1 revolves around the time when Graham came to the kingdom of Daventry in an effort to fulfill his initial dream of becoming a knight. Chapter 2 focuses on Graham's first adventure after being crowned king of Daventry where he had to save his new kingdom from invading goblins. Chapter 3 recounts the tale of his search for a bride and the new Queen of Daventry. Chapter 4 revolves around Graham taking his now-budding family on vacation, however, they soon find out that they got more than they bargained for. Finally, chapter 5 focuses on Graham retelling the story of his final confrontation with his arch-nemesis Manannan. As I mentioned earlier, there is also a bonus epilogue episode that focuses around Graham's granddaughter Gwendolyn after she is a little bit more grown up and decides to honor her grandfather's legacy.
This game plays very similarly to the TellTale games, however, I personally feel like this game is a little bit more engaging as you control the characters directly with the controller (while TellTale games are played in a point-and-click style) and it also has a lot more puzzles that it throws into the mix. I found the game's puzzles to be quite varied and thought-provoking while the game itself is very charming and funny. In King's Quest the player can move Graham using the thumbstick, access the inventory with the X button and interact with or view objects using the A button. The player also has to use the face buttons during conversations with other characters in order to make different dialogue choices. It's a game that's fairly easy to pick up and play since the control scheme is so simple and, even though some of the puzzles can be a little hard to dissect every now and then, the game itself is worth checking out for its charm and awesome story alone. It's also worth noting that the older version of Graham is voiced by none other than Christopher Lloyd (who is best known for portraying Doc Brown in the Back to the Future franchise).
Finally, with regards to the achievements in this game: the game includes a whopping total of 53 achievements for a total of 1800 GS. This game includes a mix of story-based achievements and (quite imaginative) miscellaneous achievements that are missable (such as getting eaten by a "unicorn" or using a dyed badger to eat a beehive). Most of the achievements do fall under the miscellaneous/missable category and I would highly suggest to follow my walkthrough or a written guide as some of them can be quite elusive. The game itself will take around 20 to 22 hours to finish and the game does offer chapter select which makes it a little bit easier to mop up any achievements that you may have missed. There are a few choice-based achievements which will require you to replay certain sections over as you will be able to only choose one path/choice.
