Kirby's Adventure (Longplay)
Part 1 and... well, I guess also the finale of my Kirby's Adventure longplay!
Oh, hi. Did I say Hollow Knight would be appearing today? I'm sorry. I had done a playthrough of Kirby's Adventure recently and I realized that from start to finish, the game was short enough to throw into a single video, so here ya go!
So let's talk Kirby's Adventure for a moment. This game came out 1993, being one of the last games released for the system that was published by Nintendo themselves with only a few other titles put out afterwards. At this point, the NES was already succeeded by the SNES, but that didn't stop them from trying to make this game stand out on its own.
As you might be able to tell, this game is rather graphically impressive for an NES game, utilizing everything they learned about programming on the gray brick console. This game even introduced a couple of staples to the Kirby franchise, including the introduction of Meta Knight and Kirby's trademark ability of being able to copy his opponents!
So, how's this game fair in my opinion?
Well, I grew up with a copy of this game as a kid and I played it to death. While I applaud the technological marvel of what went into developing this game, it is still pretty rough around the edges because all NES games are like that. It suffers from the occasional janky controls and more than its fair share of frame rate stuttering because of how much this game pushes the NES to begin with. If you get hit and loose your copy ability, unless there is a wall where the star can bounce back, forget it. That copy star moves at the same speed as Kirby's run, so you're not catching it before it disappears.
In 2002, riding the high off the Kirby anime, Kirby's Adventure was remade for the GameBoy Advance under the name of Kirby: Nightmare In Dream Land. This game introduced a tonal shift in Kirby's design, the logo, and essentially the entire presentation that now more closely resembles Kirby in modern times.
What I find particularly interesting about Nightmare In Dream Land is that I really don't recall this game being advertised as a remake of Kirby's Adventure. Pit the two side-by-side and the results are obvious. There are some changes, of course, such as a change of graphics, mini-games, and gameplay engine. But level lay-out, it is identical with only mild tweeks here and there. I haven't played Nightmare In Dream Land in decades, though, so I can't quite site more than that.
Phew... alright, I think that'll do it for now. Sorry I got your hopes up about Hollow Knight, but worry not! That is coming Friday! Promise. I already got the videos ready to go and with my snazzy new internet, I can upload them in no time flat! I mean, two games done in less than two weeks! This new internet is awesome!
See ya when for more exposition!
