This tutorial focuses on the basics of layer management in Krita 2.9. A future video will cover all of the changes brought by the 3.0 version.
Layers are hard to get into if you’re not used to digital image retouching. Yet, they allow you to achieve a great deal of time saving operations. They allow you to change the way parts of your image blend together. In Krita, you can apply filters and nondestructive effects to specific layers.
Layers also allow you to rearrange your images’ composition at any time! You can keep your characters separate from your background, and work on them without messing up your painting. There is even a parameter to prevent you from painting outside of existing pixels on a layer.
If layer management is hard to get into, you should really take the time to learn it. Mastering layers will save you a lot of time as you learn new features in Krita.
