NES Launch Title #7 - Kung Fu. Regarded as the first beat'em up video game, the side-scrolling game was originally an arcade game called 'Kung Fu Master'. It was ported to various consoles in the 80s including as a launch title for the NES, called simply 'Kung Fu'. In the game, you control Thomas, the titular Kung-Fu Master, as he fights his way through the five levels of the Devil's Temple in order to rescue his girlfriend Sylvia from the crime boss Mr. X.

The player controls Thomas with the NES four-way D-pad and two attack buttons to punch and kick. Unlike more conventional side-scrolling games, the D-pad is used not only to crouch, but also to jump. Punches and kicks can be performed from a standing, crouching or jumping position. Punches award more points than kicks and do more damage, but their range is shorter.

This game can literally be completed in about six minutes. Why did it seem so much longer when I was a kid? The game offers two different modes of play: 'Game A' and 'Game B'. They are essentially identical, with 'Game B' having a harder difficulty. This is a quick playthrough of 'Game A'.
