I take a behind the scenes look at the making of 'Lady and the Tramp', Walt Disney's 14th feature-length animated masterpiece.
When I first started production on this installment, I never would have expected my work to be somewhat of a detective hunt. This is a movie which, I surprisingly found to have a poorly documented early production, and whose story had been told in many contradictory ways over the years – by both unreliable and reliable sources.
To put together this piece I had to go on my own detective hunt, to get right down to the true story of the production of the film – even enlisting the help of various Disney Historians as well as tracking down documentation at the University of Michigan in the United States, to help me form, what I hope to be, one of the first fully accurate documentations of this picture.
In some cases, the poor documentation of this feature was the work of a studio publicity machine, who felt their own fabricated version of the truth was better than what actually happened.
