If you want to use a Lamy ballpoint pen (like the Al-Star https://amzn.to/2T4st8e, Lamy 2000, Lamy Vista, Lamy Safari, etc ) then you are basically stuck with the M16 ballpoint refill. It's an OK, but not great refill. I'd recommend it in Medium ( https://amzn.to/2MmhcNZ ) but it's OK in broad as well ( https://amzn.to/2MjD8JC ).

The main thing you want to do is get a NEW one, instead of an old one, since the quality has improved over time and ones that are more than a year old can feel slow and sludgy.

People used to really recommend the Monteverde M16 alternative ballpoint refill ( https://amzn.to/2W3GiFP ) but I haven't been impressed with these. Yes, there are a more color options than Lamy offers, but the writing quality isn't any better than what Lamy offers.
