Lands of Lore Part 12: Avoiding Fireballs
Once we’re on Level 4, the first thing I do is remove all our armor. There’s an enemy type down here that fights using acid, and it’s capable of melting our armor into nothing if we’re unlucky. It’s best to simply avoid the prospect, so I unequip all the armor—helms, shields, and torso gear—from each party member before advancing forward. Sure enough, we quickly bump into them. Called Moribunds, they have slimy green bodies poking out from a snail-like shell, and we’re facing two of them. Since we don’t have armor, they inflict more damage on us than normal—Baccata actually gets Koed--but since we have the Goblet that’s alright. We wipe them out and I revive Baccata, then we resume exploring. There’s an intersection where we can either go straight or to the left; I go straight for now. We bump into some Flying Spiders that are quickly dispatched, then we find a treasure chest. It contains ten coins and a Crossbow—a particularly good ranged weapon—but that’s it. We’ve now uncovered everything there is to see along this path, so I return to the intersection and take the other route. Notably, going that way triggers a fireball in the main corridor, which I demonstrate before moving forward.
The other corridor appears to dead-end, but one of the walls is removable—clicking on it causes it to disappear. Stepping forward triggers another fireball trap, so we have a fireball coming right at us! To avoid it, we have to step to the right into a different pathway. We actually still need to reach the end of that original pathway—it’s got a treasure chest I want to open—but we can’t get there directly because of the fireball trap. Fortunately, there’s an alternate way to get there, so I head into the new pathway and defeat a Moribund before finding a section of wall with cracks in it. We can use the Sledge to break through this wall and get to the treasure chest we need, bypassing the fireball trap. I do so and we find a Salve and a Bezel Ring. The Salve is nice, but the real prize is the Bezel Ring—it acts to prevent the wearer from being poisoned, an invaluable asset with the poison-spreading enemies in the cave. I equip it to Michael’s finger, defeat a Flying Spider that’s found us, and move forward. There’s a switch on a nearby wall, but I make sure not to touch it—that’ll activate another fireball trap and we don’t want to deal with that.
We finally reach what looks like a dead end, but a wall section has cracks in it, so we use the Sledge to bust through. As we enter the newly-open path, I spot a pressure plate straight ahead. There are several of those in this next area, and they act to trigger fireball traps. What we have to do to avoid these traps is drop a heavy but otherwise useless item on the plate before moving forward; that’ll trigger the fireball once and then allow us to move on unharmed. I drop one of the human bones we found when we were rescuing Lora; sure enough, a fireball comes at the spot from the side. We can now move forward safely, although I keep a lookout for any other pressure plates. We eventually find one, and I place a rock on it to trigger another fireball trap. I walk past it, and just up ahead is a third pressure plate, which I neutralize with a horseshoe. This path dead-ends, but not before we find a hidden niche in the wall with a bag of 24 silver coins. I happily take the money, then move to the center of the room and find a tunnel heading up. Going up takes us to a small area with another tunnel at the end—this one is going to take us to the Draracle’s throne room! We’ve accomplished our goal, and before going in I make sure to unequip Lora’s rapier and boots. Once we visit the Draracle, she’ll leave the party, and if she’s got any equipment it’ll be lost forever. On the other hand, we’re also done with Moribunds, so I re-equip Michael and Baccata with the armor I removed earlier. In the next video we’ll talk to the Draracle and try to get the cure we came here for.
