Large Meteorite EXPLODES above Chicago (caught on film!)
Approaching midnight there was a massive flash seen by millions of people, and soon afterwards emergency calls started coming in about falling debris.
Given the talk of Weapons of Mass Destruction, the heightened terrorist threat level and the war going on in Iraq at the time I’m sure a few of those people did the ol’ “duck and cover”
Fortunately no-one was hurt but at least two houses in Park Forest were struck, as well as the fire station. In the following days many fragments were recovered in the area. Totalling around 40 lb or 18kgs and the single largest stone is about 5.5 lbs
Or 2.5 kilograms.
The guesstimate is that it weight at least 900kgs before hitting the atmosphere and exploded with the force of 500 tons of TNT.
It is one of a very few times in modern history where a meteorite of this size landed near a populated area...
