"Wanda at Large" 1st Episode Airs
The show follows Wanda Sykes’ character who goes from struggling stand up comedian to a correspondent for a fictional DC politics show and her social commentary while popular with the people puts her in conflict with the show’s anchors and producers…
Over 14 million people tuned in to watch the first episode and the show became Fox’s 4th most viewed series prompting it to be renewed for a second season.
That second season was released in September 2003 but saw the show moved to 8:30pm on a Friday….a time slot also known as the “death slot” and the show went from an average of 10 million viewers per episode to 3.8 million.
Despite positive reviews from critics at the time, Wanda at Large was canceled during that second season.
This sparked theories that the timeslot change and the cancellation were done deliberately because Sykes and her show were too politically charged for Fox.
