Nintendo had been hard at work on the Cel-Shading that gave Wind Waker its bright tone and unique visual style when they revealed some footage to critics and fans at E3 2001.

Anticipating praise the developers were instead met with outrage as gamers, expecting a more mature and darker experience, called the look childish

Nintendo was so concerned by this response that they refused to release more footage until the game was completed…

This seems to have been the right decision as critics generally praised the graphics…which were pretty revolutionary for the day…as well as the gameplay

…in the end Wind Waker sold well enough, with a strong showing in Japan, but the North American fan base remained stubbornly divided .

Over the last two decades gamers have taken a second look at Wind Waker and it is now seen in a far more favorable light with many ranking it as one the best Zeldas.

Perhaps, ironically, they needed to mature a little to come to appreciate a game they once dismissed as childish

I say that but as a non-nintendo gamer I have to agree that it does look like a kids game and I find that unappealing.
