Chapter 6: The Suburbs

Hope flickers, then fades.

Following their escape from Pittsburgh, Joel, Ellie, Henry, and Sam find themselves washed up in the suburbs outside the city, near an old neighborhood and a sewer system once used as a hideout for a group of survivors. The group slowly bonds, especially Ellie and Sam, who grow close as they share jokes, comic books, and a bit of normalcy in a broken world.

The early part of the chapter is focused on exploration and environmental storytelling. Players uncover remnants of the group that once lived in the sewers, including heartbreaking traces of what happened when things fell apart. There’s also a mix of stealth and action as infected return to the spotlight.

Eventually, the group reaches the neighborhood streets, only to be pinned down by a sniper in a tense sequence that ends with a massive infected horde forcing everyone to flee.

That night, they take refuge in a nearby house. Ellie and Sam stay up talking, and we get a rare moment of peace—until the next morning, when everything shatters.

Sam has been bitten. He hides it from everyone, but by morning, he’s turned. In the chaos, Henry is forced to kill his own brother—then, overwhelmed with grief, he takes his own life right in front of Joel and Ellie.

The chapter ends in silence, with no music, no dialogue—just a black screen and the sound of emotional weight settling in.
