Chapter 7: Tommy’s Dam

Family ties and fractured trust.

Several months after the heartbreaking events in the suburbs, Joel and Ellie continue their journey west and arrive in Wyoming, where Joel hopes to find his brother, Tommy—a former Firefly who might help them reach the group Ellie is meant to meet.

They locate Tommy at a hydroelectric dam, where he’s helping build a self-sustaining, fortified community with his wife, Maria. It’s a rare sight in this world: safety, cooperation, and hope. But with it comes tension—especially between Joel and Tommy, whose relationship is strained by past choices and the weight of survival.

As Joel sees a chance to finally hand off responsibility for Ellie, we start to see Ellie’s emotional investment in him. When she overhears Joel’s plan to leave her with Tommy, she runs away, feeling betrayed and abandoned.

Joel and Tommy track her down to a nearby ranch house, where Joel and Ellie have a powerful confrontation. Ellie calls him out for trying to push her away because he’s afraid of losing another “daughter.” Joel, still haunted by Sarah’s death, struggles with the emotional weight—but ultimately decides not to leave Ellie, reaffirming their growing bond.

The chapter ends with Joel choosing to take Ellie the rest of the way himself, riding off with her as the Wyoming wind sweeps through the trees.
