Chapter 3: The Outskirts

Into the unknown, where danger hides in every shadow.

Joel, Tess, and Ellie begin their journey outside the Boston Quarantine Zone, navigating through the ruined, overgrown parts of the city. Their goal is to reach the Capitol Building, where a group of Fireflies is supposed to be waiting to take Ellie. This chapter is where the world truly opens up, both in scale and danger.

They move through abandoned buildings, crumbling skyscrapers, and dark, infected-filled areas. The Clickers make their terrifying first appearance here—blind, grotesque creatures that use echolocation and can kill in a single hit. This forces the player to adopt stealthier and more strategic gameplay.

Throughout the chapter, Ellie’s personality begins to shine—curious, sarcastic, and stubborn. Joel, still emotionally guarded, keeps his distance, while Tess seems more open to Ellie’s presence.

Eventually, they reach the Capitol Building, only to find the Fireflies there are dead. In the chaos that follows, Tess reveals she’s been bitten. Knowing her fate is sealed, she makes a last stand against the pursuing soldiers so Joel and Ellie can escape. Her death marks a pivotal turning point—Joel is now alone with Ellie, forced into a journey he never wanted.
