Chapter 8: The University

Searching for answers in an abandoned world.

Joel and Ellie reach the University of Eastern Colorado, where they believe the Fireflies have set up a research base. Riding in on horseback, they find the campus overgrown, abandoned, and eerily quiet. It’s clear that whatever was here has long since been left behind.

Exploring the campus, Joel and Ellie find clues that the Fireflies had been studying the infection and were hoping to develop a cure—but they’ve since relocated to a hospital in Salt Lake City. Along the way, the two continue to bond with lighter, more casual moments—throwing bricks at windows, sharing jokes—but the underlying sense of danger never leaves.

As they try to leave, they’re ambushed by a group of hostile survivors scavenging the area. A brutal fight follows, and during the escape, Joel falls from a balcony and is severely injured, getting impaled on a piece of rebar.

Bleeding badly and barely conscious, Joel struggles to stay on his horse as Ellie frantically gets him to safety. The chapter closes with a haunting moment: winter falls, Joel’s life hanging by a thread, and Ellie suddenly forced into a role she’s never had to take before—protector.
