Now that FFB is working in Le Mans I had a bit of an extended play on it last night. The first 30 seconds of this video are just me demonstrating the FFB working (jump to 00:30 for the gameplay proper.) I'm not sure if I've got the Porsche set as the 'special car' or not (something you can apparently alter in the test menu to give one of the cars better acceleration - I say apparently because I've not looked into it myself), but using it I managed to come fourth in the 24hr race, which is the best I've ever managed so far. Normally when I've played the 24 hour race, it's after I've just started the game up, so it was interesting to note that when you play the game again straight after, it starts at a different time of day and there were some BGMs I'd never heard play in the game before and that there are multiple different times of day the game starts at. This seems to also affect the behaviour of the CPUs a bit as well, there was one game I played where I was driving well, but didn't encounter another CPU car for almost the entirety of the first lap. I'd made a save state on the title screen before this (so if I cocked up I could just easily return to the title screen and start again), so I did, started the game in the same conditions and the same CPU behaviour occurred. On another try I manged to catch up to two of the CPU cars almost immediately after starting the race and they oddly both caught fire as I was approaching them. I'm not sure if the progress you make in catching up with the CPUs is also somehow linked with the (really fucking annoying) rubber bandy rival car that seem to harass you constantly, and whether you can break away from it.

I've mentioned this before, but I really have developed a bit of a new found appreciation for this game in recent years. I used to just think of it as the slightly weird handling, not as good looking as Scud Race or Daytona USA 2 model 3 racer. But the thing is, the dynamic transition from day to dusk to night to dawn and changing weather effects would've been pretty revolutionary back in 1997. And yeah, the handling does feel a bit strange compared to some other Sega racers, but as long as you're playing this with a wheel and not a pad I think it controls just fine. And I totally dig the music in this game, the cool sort of jazzy House style perfectly suits the continental race vibe the rest of the game has.

Anyway, check out yourself just how much this game's progressed since its early day in Supermodel: https://youtu.be/ASyppvwrGSE

If you need a bit more help getting the FFB into the game, this is how: Read this first: http://www.supermodel3.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1610#p15645

My regular Scud Race ROM didn't actually have an identically matching .bin (epr-19338a.bin), but Scud Race Plus did when I unzipped it, so I used that. Once you've zipped your Le Mans ROM back up, go to you XML file in Supermodel's config folder, right click on it and edit it with Notepad. Find the text in the link below, underneath the 'use of normal rom:(untouched games.xml file)' code box and replace all of it with the text in the code box underneath 'use of the trick:' Save and exit the XML file and then start the game with the same commands you would to get FFB working normally.
