LESSON: How To Encourage Understanding In Those Around You
It can seem endless, the problems and issues that we have to deal with on a daily basis but making human connections can smooth the path through life.
Why not take advantage of the problems that come up in everyday work or family life. The next time there's a problem between you and a friend or colleague, think of it as a teachable moment.
Visualise the problem as an opportunity to reach out.
We can do this in a number of simple ways ......
1. Ask questions about feelings, needs, wants, and choices ...
Listen with care and repeat ideas to be sure that you understand. Stay warm and non-judgmental. Keep your sense of humor. Reflect on the issue. Reflection is how we develop integrity and judgment, and good judgment can often develop from a series of bad experiences.
2. Practice finding win-win solutions ...
As we live we learn. There are daily opportunities in every life to point out differences in needs and consider solutions that might work for everyone. There is a little give and take in every situation and you can use this to get to know people's borders and boundaries, tastes and dislikes.
3. Model “I” statements ...
This means expressing what you need, rather than judging or attacking someone else. Remember to focus on the message and not the messanger. The way that adults in the world relate to each other sets a powerful example for their friends and colleagues. Take control of your feelings and own what you say.
If you need to, then distance yourself from negative ideas, statements and people. It never benefits a person to communicate in a manner below their station. Strong bonds of trust only develop over time.
We all have our various personal struggles so we need to work with each other to find the best solutions.
Think about what you can encourage in those around you today.
Life is already hard ... let's not make it harder.
