Mahalo expert Justin Z. gives a tutorial on the Photoshop add anchor point tool.

About the Add Anchor Point Tool
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The Add Anchor Point Tool is basically an extension of the Pen Tool. The Pen Tool allows you to create a path of points that can be manipulated to map around an image. The Add Anchor Point Tool simply allows you to add points to that path. It can prove useful when going back to perfect a previous path.

Using the Add Anchor Point Tool
---------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Click on the pen icon in the
Tool bar (leftmost side of your screen). This will prompt a new menu window with various pen tools.
2. Choose Add Anchor Point Pen Tool (third from top). For this tool to work, you need to have a previously-created path made with the Pen Tool.

3. Click anywhere on the path and you can create an anchor point. These points will automatically be curve points. These are usually the preferred type of points because straight points are the same as
Polygon Lasso Tools and the point of a Pen Tool is to create perfectly-curved selections.
One thing to note is that this tool can be accessed very easily through a keyboard command. Press and hold the Control/Command key + a mouse click on the path to activate it.
