Mahalo expert Justin Z. gives a tutorial on the Photoshop mask type tool.

About the Mask Type Tool
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The MaskType Tool is like the standard Horizontal or Vertical Type Tool, except that it instead of creating letters that have a pre-defined selection, it allows for an editable selection. This feature allows for a massive amount of customization to your text.

Using the Mask Type Tool
---------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Click and hold on the T icon in the Tool Bar (leftmost side of your screen). This will prompt a menu in which the mask tools are the last two (horizontal and vertical).

2. Click on your image and it will turn a temporary, translucent red.

3. Type-in your desired text and then hit the V key to finish your selection. You can do just about anything to this text. You can move it, which will leave an imprint of your text based on your selected background color, you can paint into it or fill it with a paint bucket or gradient.

Any tool you can use to manipulate your image, you can use to alter your text. The potential of this tool is limited only to your imagination and your knowledge of Photoshop.
