Mahalo expert Justin Z. gives a tutorial on the Photoshop vertical type tool.

About the Vertical Type Tool
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The Vertical Type Tool is exactly the same as the Horizontal Type Tool, except that it will stack your text vertically. It's wide range of use gives you a massive amount of creative control when incorporating text into your images.

Using the Vertical Type Tool
---------------------------------------------------------------------

1. To access this feature, click on the T icon in the
Tool bar (leftmost side of your screen), then drag down to the Vertical Type Tool listen therein.
2. Click anywhere in your canvas and you can start typing. You can type as much as you want without any limit for space. You may also click and drag which will create a shape in which your text will be written. This can come in handy if you need to restrict a designated area for your text within the image.
3. To alter the font style, size, color, sharpness & smoothness and, lastly, the positioning of the text relative to the space it is in, choose any of the features within the top Options Panel. You can also choose "Warped Text," which is a great tool for creative text effects.
4. Click the warped T icon in the Options Panel and it will prompt the Warped Text window. Here you can choose a fun variety of warped effects for your text. These are just the basics of the Horizontal Type Tool. With a little practice, you can implement some powerful written additions to your graphic designs.
