1Next up in our FAA Conversion Course: Lesson 2 of our IFR phase will see us flying two short hops focused on classic navigation techniques and airway procedures. This is your chance to hone in on your skills using VORs, radials, and published routing.
✈️ Practical Flights:
1️⃣ KBOS ➔ KPVD | WINGS IFR 2 – VOR Navigation
We’ll depart Boston using the LOGAN# SID and fly the TEC route to Providence using the Providence VOR (PVD 115.60).
Skills covered:
VOR-to-VOR navigation
Flying TEC routes within TRACON-only airspace
Maintaining heading control and radial tracking
Flying an ILS approach into KPVD
2️⃣ KPVD ➔ KMVY | WINGS IFR 3 – Airways
Next, we’ll fly the V167 airway from Providence to Martha’s Vineyard using the FAA’s low-altitude enroute charts.
Skills covered:
Joining and tracking a Victor airway
Understanding MEAs, DME, and intersection identification
Executing a visual approach at KMVY (weather permitting)
Managing a non-SID departure and enroute airway navigation
What we will focus on:
Filing a correct FAA IFR flight plan
Identifying and tuning VORs
Reading low-enroute charts in SkyVector
How to handle “Direct to VOR” clearances without GPS
FAA-style phraseology throughout: clearances, climbouts, approach briefings
Be ready to fly by the numbers and have your VOR and enroute charts ready — this is one of the most “hands-on” IFR flights of the course so far.
