Check if You're Up to Date

Click the Start menu then select All Programs. Choose Windows Update. You can also access it from the Start menu search by typing in "windows update."
Once the window opens, click Check for Updates in the upper left corner of the sidebar. It will tell you how many updates are available, and you can decide whether you'd like to install all or just some of them by checking/unchecking the box next to the name. Click OK.
Updates can take anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 minutes depending on the size. Some updates will also require you to restart your computer. For optional updates, you can install or not; it's up to you.
Update Automatically

From Windows Update, select Change settings. Choose the time of day that you would like you computer to automatically check for updates. Usually it's best to select a time when you are not planning on using your computer.
