This is video #21 in my playthrough of the Legend of Zelda for the Nintendo Entertainment System. We are currently in the Second Quest. In the northwest corner of Hyrule, Link has opened up the entrance to Level 9 after completing the Triforce of Wisdom. This is another long, complicated dungeon, like Level 9 in the First Quest. This time, it is complicated by one-way doors.

LInk first explores the rooms northeast of the entrance. There is a Patra in an eastern room (time 1:24). In the room to the west, after exterminating the Blue Wizzrobes, Link can access a secret room with the dungeon's first treasure, Silver Arrows (time 2:32). As before, these are required to finish off Ganon.

West of the entrance, Link finds the speedy Blue Lanmolas (time 4:01). It is best to stand back and blast away with the Magic Wand.

When a man invites Link to go to the next room (time 7:44), go left.

Another Patra is in the northwest of the dungeon (time 8:18).

Two Blue Lanmolas are in the neighboring room to the west (time 9:05). After killing them off, he can access the basement and find the dungeon's second treasure, the Red Ring, to boost his defense.

The secret passage in the Patra's chamber leads clear across to the northeast side of the dungeon. Outside of Ganon's chamber, Link will find the third Patra guarding its master's lair (time 10:29).

In the room east of this Patra, Link finds Ganon himself (time 11:03). It is a little disappointing that he is as easy to kill as he was in the First Quest. When Ganon is defeated, Link acquires the Triforce of Power.

Finally, Link reaches the end of the dungeon and frees Princess Zelda (time 11:50). With that, our quest is now over!

In all, I have enjoyed making this playthrough, despite the sometimes overwhelming numbers of Wizzrobes and Darknuts in the Second Quest. Overall, I find this game a great start to the Zelda series. The overworld theme has become an iconic theme for the series in general. It is also nice that you can boost Link's health, strength, and defense in the course of the game with Heart Containers, swords, and rings. This game world was quite huge for the time, considering the game was developed in 1986 for an 8-bit gaming console. The control is not quite as refined as later games in the series, but it is not bad. Overall, Zelda is a solid early game, and I feel that any serious gamer should play through the First Quest at least once.

Thanks for watching!

This video is part of my Legend of Zelda [NES] Playthrough playlist. This is the version originally released for the NES in 1987. I am playing on the FCE Ultra emulator. All characters, story, music, artwork, and other components of this game are the property of their respective owners.

Played and recorded in FCE Ultra version 2.1.5. Produced with Adobe Premiere Pro CS6.
