Irithyll is certainly a different experience than doing it melee. A lot of the enemies that are normally a pain to deal with are made immensely easier. The flip side is if you DO screw up as a mage, your health just plummets. Considering I inflict the same thing to enemies... pretty fair trade I say.

Seriously the flipping regular enemies that carry scythes are arguably one of the hardest regular enemies in the entire game to me.They hit hard, fast, and are relentless. Only way to survive is either to kill them before they get near you..or learn invincibility frames and abuse them because they'll trap you near walls and keep on swinging.
