Let's Design Cedar Flags Ep.2 - Building Our Wooden Roller Coaster and Station - Planet Coaster
It's still early in the series but we are already building our first wooden roller coaster. This coaster is located close to the entrance which we designed in the first episode and runs along the side border of the park. This was only the third coaster I've built in this game so I was still getting used to the coaster builder but in the end this coaster comes out great. I'm looking for you guys to help name this wooden thrill ride in the comments below!
We first needed to do some terrain editing. The park started extremely flat and we needed to make it a bit more interesting. I had a general idea of what I wanted this area to look like so I started with a rough shape. I then built the coaster and then went back to finish up the detailing and ground sculpting. The terrain tools took some getting used to. There is still a learning curve that I’m working against in Planet Coaster.
As for the coaster, we have used the wooden roller coaster model and created a completely custom track. The coaster features a 150+ foot hill with a 126 foot first drop. The train reaches a top speed of 63 mph. The train travels nearly 3,300 feet over the course of the ride. There are some common elements on this ride such as airtime hills and large helixes as well as a double down. There are also a couple steep overbanking turns. The coaster runs through a few interesting bits of terrain including a ravine and under a couple rock tunnels. In the end, the ride scores in the green for all ratings (excitement, fear, and nausea).
We then go on to work on the queue/coaster station. We’re custom building an area with the guest experience in mind. I try to incorporate as much of the real world theme park psychology as I can when I’m building in Planet Coaster. I want the station to visually entice guests to ride the ride. There is a good bit of general theming as well as utilitarianism that goes into station designs. On the outside, there are elements that add to the guest’s entertainment and immersion while inside there are components that will help our staff ensure a safe operating environment.
There is about 5.5 hours of time spent in building for this episode. I’d guess that at least half of it was spent exclusively on the station itself. There were many meticulous things that took a ton of time but we’re very exciting to watch so they got cut out of the timelapse. One of those things that got shortened was the process of going around to all of the railing supports and placing a new post to make the paths seem like they are being supported by something. This took forever but I think really looks great in the end.
I have been cutting out a lot of footage in the editing process but I feel like you guys are able to follow along with the overall creative process that goes into each of these episodes. In this episode you got to see all of the revisions of the wooden coaster building. I cut out a lot of the smoothing and little tweaks that needed to be made in order to get to the final product. If you want to see anything about these videos changed, let me know in the comments!
