Let’s explore this abandoned psychiatric hospital #shorts
Exploring this former hospital known as Southwest Regional Center which is made up of 24 buildings totalling 650,000 square feet sitting on almost 300 acres of land. It even has its own sewage and hydro generating plant. It opened in 1961 as the last massive institution built in Ontario for the treatment of various psychiatric conditions and disabilities.
By the mid-60s, there were 1200 patients and 600 staff members. By 1979, this had decreased by around half that amount as patients were slowing transitioning to the community. The provincial government made a decision to close this hospital on Oct 30, 2008 as patients were now being treated in a community-based setting.
I was granted permission by the owner to explore this former institution. It was a legal requirement that he send one of his employees to come along.
There are plans to demolish it, so it has been abandoned as a hospital as well as converting into anything else. It will be a shame as the builders spared no expense into the construction of this facility using nothing but the best materials.
A couple teams of ghost hunters spent two weekends here. An army also was using the building for practice which resulted in many loud explosions and broken walls. #shorts
