Let's Next fest: One Lonely Outpost, Wanderful, and New Cycle
0Next Fest 2023 is upon us, and I'm jumping on the demo bandwagon!

One Lonely Outpost is space Stardew Valley, he said, being disgustingly reductive. You are sent to a barren planet with the corporate-given goal of revitalizing the planet. You do that by farming, upping your technology, and eventually bringing in more settlers. It's a neat twist wherein you have to build up the town around you, but in a very literal way. There is also Alien Stuff to discover, which gave me some real Subnautica vibes. Overall it's an interesting conceit for a game, and I hope some QoL changes are made to the controls and interface, as those were my biggest stumbling blocks.
Wanderful is an adorable tile-placement exploration game. You generate a random world based on a seed, and then off you go exploring. You have a limited number of moves that you can extend by collecting flames on the map. Collecting the flames also gives you new things to place down on the map. Honestly the game has a simple enough mechanic and it's cute as heck. It's worth at least checking out the demo.
New Cycle is a city building survival game, which is a growing category of games (think Frostpunk, but not as grim). You and your band of survivors have survived the end of civilized world as we know it, and are now aiming to rebuild. You have to gather resources, build up your technology trees, and manage your supplies and morale. There's a tech tree, random events, and an AI chat bot that honestly was painful to interact with. Overall a pretty interesting game that I'll be keeping an eye on.
