Credit to this game where it's deserved, the story mode does actually cover events that aren't in the trilogy movies, and sometimes not even in the 1997 anime!

Of course this is still visible even after the first timeskip in the trilogy, but Guts had some trust issues with the Band of the Hawk when he was first "recruited". Same from them to him, save for Judau who is the eternal goodest of boys, and Griffith, who is somehow both childish enough to believe he won't betray them and insightful enough to know he has no motive to.
