Those that have watched me play through other D&D games will know how challenging encounters with beholders are. Their central eye emits an antimagic cone and their ability to fly can put them out of reach of melee fighters. The true challenge comes from their many ray attacks that they can fire from their eyes, with a myriad of devastating effects which can obliterate an unprepared party and even some prepared ones. To underestimate them is folly, for they are highly intelligent and employ great cunning and guile in combat.

You may therefore wonder what Terri and the party could possibly be thinking as they head into the heart of the cult that they know is led by a beholder. They’ve already encountered some gauths and there’ll be more of them and beholders in their future. You’ve seen how quickly the ray attacks are fired off in this game – a lot faster than they are in tabletop, that’s for sure – and how much damage our party takes from said attacks, which will make you wonder if there’s an easier way to deal with them.

There is one way to make it easier but it’s exceptionally costly, taking the form of a magic shield that would reflect back beholder rays fired at the wielder. The downsides of the shield are that its main use is limited only to beholders who aren’t seen too often, it reduces the strength of the one who holds it and the cost of the weapon makes it a hefty investment, one I’d sooner avoid. It certainly makes this section of the game a lot easier, though hopefully I’ll show you that it’s not strictly required if you’re prepared to take things slower and employ some sneaky tactics of your own.
