We’ve recovered the half of the strange artefact that the cult wanted us to retrieve for them and that we most certainly aren’t going to give them, in part because they’re an evil cult led by a beholder and also because that would likely deny us a large quantity of experience and loot. We only got this after asking an all-but forgotten god really nicely and even then we’re only borrowing it because one does not double cross a god, not even a really weak one.

Besides, he’s put his name on it in permanent marker and there’s no way we can get that off. Not even universal solvent gets permanent marker off things.

Even though we don’t want to hand the artefact over to the cult, we still need to sneak into their headquarters and dispatch the beholder leading them if we’re going to end the threat they pose. This means getting the half of the item we have dangerously close to them, but if we’re careful and pay attention to what people on our side tell us, we should be able to do that minimal danger. Well, there’ll be plenty of danger, but beholders and gauths are a very different degree of danger which makes many other threats seem trivial in comparison.
